Why Were Canopy Beds Invented. In the 13th century, a canopy or tester was introduced, suspended by cords from the beams above, on which curtains were hung. The first curtains were thought to have been invented by the romans in 500 bc, who used them for decoration and privacy.
But as the beds evolved, posts and beams developed to support the canopy for a more durable design. Medieval noble families slept in the great hall of their castle, and most of their servants slept in the hall with them. During the medieval period four poster beds were used by the people.
